Giancarlo Esposito Admits to Planning His Own Death Before Achieving Success with 'Breaking Bad'

Giancarlo Esposito, the 65-year-old actor known for his role in "Breaking Bad," once contemplated suicide to provide insurance money for his family. Esposito revealed this during a recent interview on SiriusXM's "Jim and Sam Show." Giancarlo asked his wife about life insurance and suicide. She was confused. He began plotting to have someone kill him, naming it "death through misadventure," so his wife and four children could receive the insurance.

"I wanted them to have a good life during a difficult period. "I considered self-annihilation as a means to ensure their survival," he revealed, realizing it was a potential escape but acknowledging the consequences for himself and his children. Ultimately, he couldn't proceed with such a plan as it would traumatize his family.

"I realized it's not feasible because of the pain it would cause them, leading to long-lasting trauma that perpetuates the generational trauma I'm trying to escape," Esposito explained. Esposito, father of Shayne, Ruby, Kale, and Syrlucia with ex-wife Joy McManigal, earned three Emmy nominations for his role as Gus Fring on "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul."

He continued to shine in shows such as "Godfather of Harlem," "The Boys," and "Parish" after the conclusion of "Breaking Bad" in 2013. "The Mandalorian" actor praised the Bryan Cranston-led series as "the light at the end."
